Ingrid Goes West is a 2017 American comedy-drama film directed by Matt Spicer and written by Spicer and David Branson Smith. The film stars Aubrey Plaza.
SOCIAL MEDEA - My Review of INGRID GOES WEST (4 Stars). Director Matt Spicer and co- writer David Branson Smith paint themselves into a corner right at the start of INGRID GOES WEST. Our title character, obsessed by a stranger's Instagram feed, shows up at her wedding, furious that she wasn't invited, and proceeds to mace the poor, unsuspecting bride.
After a stint in a mental health facility, Ingrid, clearly not "cured", sets her sights on another social media influencer, moving out to LA to live her best life, or stalk someone else, or just because she's seriously damaged. Regardless, it's no easy feat to come back from the seriously delusional character they've established, but thanks to a smart script, terrific direction, a winning cast, especially the breakthrough lead performance by Aubrey Plaza, they succeed beautifully. This is dark stuff, but stick with it. It has something to say about how we relate to each other when all we do is look at ourselves in our phone screens anymore. Due to a well- timed inheritance, Ingrid moves out to Venice, CA, which puts her a stone's throw away from her target, Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen).
Ingrid Goes West Trailer Song
With hundreds of thousands of Insta- followers, Sloane leads the seemingly perfect life with her perfect boyfriend Ezra (Wyatt Russell), her perfect sense of style, and let's not forget, her perfect avocado toast! Ingrid connives to meet Taylor in a truly twisted way, and lo and behold, they're instant BFFs. Spicer and Smith explore, beat by excruciating beat, the insidious ways we can instill ourselves into someone's life, especially when the entire relationship is predicated on a few social media postings. You like macrame?
Me too! OMG! You're like my favorite person ever! Olsen, using a little girl rasp, nails her role, oblivious to Ingrid's machinations but way more grounded than anyone expects. Olsen, as a matter of birth, is no stranger to narcissism, and she manages to create a very likable character despite her intense self- obsession. Also incredibly winning is O'Shea Jackson Jr. Ice Cube's son, and who played his father in STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON) as Ingrid's landlord and love interest, Dan. He's maddened by Ingrid's flakiness, but he also recognizes good chemistry when he sees it. Jackson is pure dynamism and proves to be the moral center of the film.
When Ingrid asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend, just watch for his highly engaging reaction. Bill Magnussen (INTO THE WOODS) really connects with his role as Taylor's jacked- up, douchebag brother who just may be a lot smarter than he appears.
There's a danger here in his performance that he hasn't brought to prior parts. Ingrid creates lie upon lie in order to maintain her friendship with Taylor, so it's only a matter of time before the bubble bursts. This inevitability drives the story as we watch this feature length train wreck crash into the station. Plaza shows so many layers here, making this a real treat to watch as she moves past the monotone goth chick of her April Ludgate years on PARKS AND RECREATION. In fact, it's become an industry standard to write dead- inside characters as the "Aubry Plaza type". Well, Plaza blows that stereotype to smithereens with this film. She manages to make you care about Ingrid.
We identify with her loneliness and her need to connect with the cool kids. You won't be able to take your eyes off of her, down to the sublime and ambiguous final shot. It's a beauty of an ending. At times, the film plays like the wackier cousin to the BLACK MIRROR episode called NOSEDIVE, starring Bryce Dallas Howard as a social media obsessive trying desperately to get people to like her.
While NOSEDIVE lives in pink and blue pastels, INGRID feels earthier with its sun- dappled exteriors and dark, forbidding spaces in which Ingrid lives. Both projects leave you a little spent as they grow more intense in their final acts. What sets INGRID apart, however, is its elegant score by Jonathan Sadoff and Nick Thorburn (Ingrid's last name! Coincidence? No way!) There's a classicism to it that suggests we're witnessing something important despite the fact that we're swimming in a pool filled with insane egos. There's a little bit of ALL ABOUT EVE here, as well as a smattering of SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, TO DIE FOR, and CHUCK AND BUCK.
Tonally, however, the film is its own singular creature. INGRID GOES WEST wants you to take a hard look at your life. Can you see past your phone to the person right in front of you? INGRID seems to have an answer: REPLY HAZY, TRY AGAIN.

Neon. Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) is a mentally unstable young woman in Pennsylvania. After discovering on Instagram that an unrequited friend of hers named Charlotte (Meredith Hagner) did not invite her to her wedding, Ingrid crashes the reception and maces her in the face. Ingrid undergoes a brief stay at a mental hospital and, writing letters to Charlotte, explains that she has been having difficulties dealing with the death of her mother, who was the only person who was ever kind to her. After her release, Ingrid encounters a guest of the wedding. She says that Charlotte was never friends with Ingrid but simply commented on one of her posts, leading Ingrid to pursue a one- sided friendship with her. Later Ingrid learns of a social media influencer named Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen). Beguiled by her seemingly perfect life, Ingrid comments on one of her photographs and receives a slight response from Sloane.
With an inheritance of over $6. Ingrid decides to move to Los Angeles to become friends with Taylor. Upon arrival, she rents a house in Venice from Dan Pinto (O'Shea Jackson Jr.), an aspiring screenwriter and Batman enthusiast. She visits Taylor's regular hangouts and restaurants, and gets a makeover in her style.
After running into Taylor at one of her favorite book stores, Ingrid follows her to her house and kidnaps her dog Rothko. She returns Rothko to Taylor, officially meeting her and her husband Ezra (Wyatt Russell), a pop artist. Ingrid rejects their offer of a cash reward but has dinner with them, where they become acquainted. The next night, Ingrid and Taylor go partying in Joshua Tree. Taylor reveals she wants to buy a small house in Venice and adapt it as a thrift and book store. Soon after, Ingrid damages Dan's truck while driving under the influence.
She returns late, causing Dan to miss a table read of his screenplay. Ingrid promises to reimburse him and take him out to dinner. When they go out, they reveal painful losses in their lives.
Later that night, the two have sex and begin a relationship. The next day at Taylor and Ezra's house, Ingrid meets Taylor's brother Nicky (Billy Magnussen), a recovering drug addict, whom she immediately dislikes. He tells Taylor of a party that the two are invited to the next night, which Taylor dismisses her previous plans with Ingrid for; Ingrid's resentment towards Nicky grows. Later, at a get- together at fashion blogger Harley Chung's (Pom Klementieff) house, Dan and Nicky meet each other while Ingrid sees Taylor telling Harley about her wishes to open a thrift shop, an idea previously said to have been a secret only disclosed to Ingrid. Ingrid attempts to interrupt the conversation to make small talk with Taylor, who seems resistant. Ingrid also begins to realize that several aspects of Taylor's persona, such as her favorite book and apparent admiration for Ingrid, are fabricated.
Ingrid then talks with Nicky, who has found Ingrid's phone and blackmails her with knowledge of her obsession with Taylor that he found on Ingrid's phone. As retaliation, Ingrid devises a plan to feign domestic abuse and blame Nicky. Telling Dan that Nicky beat her, she begs him to not tell the police in fear of what Nicky may do to him; she instead convinces him to kidnap and terrorize Nicky to keep him quiet. Nicky escapes his bindings and attacks Dan, leading Ingrid to attack Nicky with a crowbar.
Dan is hospitalized and Nicky tells Taylor and Ezra; Taylor cuts off her friendship with Ingrid. Desperate, Ingrid moves into the small house nearby Taylor, using the last of her inheritance. After endlessly calling Taylor, Ezra tells Ingrid that she would have been arrested if Nicky had not been trying to hide his own crimes. Eventually, Ingrid loses power at the house and lives in a form of self- induced isolation. After noticing a nearby Halloween party at Taylor's house, she dons a bed sheet and wig and crashes the party to charge her cellphone. Taylor berates Ingrid for her behavior, saying that because of her facade, the two were never truly friends.
Bereft, Ingrid retreats to her home surrounded by lit candles and takes a self- video confessing her loneliness before overdosing on pills. She uploads it to Instagram. Ingrid survives the suicide attempt because Dan called emergency services.
She wakes in the hospital to learn that her video has gone viral, and thousands of strangers have responded to her hashtag to show support. Feeling loved, Ingrid smiles. Production[edit]Principal photography began on July 1. Los Angeles and wrapped August 1. Joshua Tree, California.[citation needed] A focal point of the film is "All My Life" by K- Ci & Jo.
Jo; initially this song was meant to be Seal's "Kiss from a Rose", however, Seal's asking price for the song was higher than the production could afford. Spicer's sister recommended "All My Life" as a replacement.[1. Release[edit]Ingrid Goes West had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 2. Shortly after, Neon acquired the North American distribution rights to the film.[1. The film was released on August 1.
Box office[edit]Following several weeks in limited release, the film went wide on August 2. Critical response[edit]On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 8. The site's critical consensus reads, "Led by strong performances from Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen, Ingrid Goes West delivers smart, topical humor underlined by timely social observations."[1.
